Sociology and education

We are today in the third generation of the industrial society
in which the complexities and endemic difficulties of social
organisation have given rise to the sociology of education.
Two acknowledged masters have written extensively of the social
role of education-Emil Durkheim, at the turn of the century, and
Karl Mannheim, about thirty or forty years later. Both saw education
in modern society as a range of activities and relationships which
could be handled as an applied science.
