The Tribally Controlled Indian Colleges: The Beginnings of Self Determination In American Indian Education

Over the ten years of research and writing many
persons have contributed to this hook. It is impossible to list them all, but a few deserve special recognition for their assistance. Dr. Margaret C. Szasz of
Albuquerque has aided and encouraged me over the
years and deserves my grateful appreciation. Others
who have given of their time and knowledge are:
John Emhoolah Jr., Denver; Howard Adams, Davis,
California; Bob Roessel, Window Rock, Arizona;
John Tippeconic, Tempe, Arizona; Joe Martin, Tuba
City, Arizona; Tom Duncan, Winters, California;
Jack Barden, Ft. Yates, North Dakota; and Lowell
Amiotte, Spearfish, South Dakota. Gerald Brown
and Gordon Dempsey, formerly of Navajo Community College, introduced me to the first tribally controlled college in 1975.
