In metropolitan France, the Euro (€) is now used as the official currency, along with of 19 of 28 member states of the European Union, as well as some of the territories of the EU and France. This group of states is known as the eurozone or euro area. Before this, the French franc (FF) was used until the introduction of the euro in 1999. The French franc was issued in France from 1360 and is still used today (2018) in the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liechtenstein, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Switzerland and Togo.
