Widow remarriage act was passed on 26 july 1856. It was drafted by Lord Dalhousie and passed by Lord Canning. That time in some parts of India, the widows have to live like a saint. They were not allowed to live like a common person. So it was a major social reform to improve the condition of the widow in India.
