When energy goes into changing the shape of some material and it stays changed, that is said to be plastic deformation. When the material goes back to its original form, that's elastic deformation. Mechanical energy is lost whenever an object undergoes plastic deformation.

After removing a deforming force, if the material regains its original configuration , it is called as elastic behaviour. After removing deforming force if the material doesn't regain its original configuration , its called as plastic behaviour. Mechanical energy lost whenever any object shows plastic deformation.
