Nitrogenase, the enzyme complex catalyzing N2 fixation, is found in phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes (archaea and bacteria, including cyanobacteria), ranging from aerobic heterotrophs, aerobic and anaerobic phototrophs to strict anaerobes (see Chapter 4 by Carpenter and Capone, this volume).
