Ethics and Values

“If you look to lead, invest at least 60% of your time managing yourself -your ethics, character, principle, purpose, motivation, and humanity. Invest at least 30% managing those with authority over you.”

Ethics is a branch of philosophy that defines the concepts of right and wrong within society. The ethics defined by various societies are more or less the same. The concept is simple however since each human being is different from the other which can be a cause of conflict at times. Ethics and aesthetics both are the sub-branches of the branch of philosophy called Axiology. The concept of ethics is largely based on the culture and religion of a society. The term ethics has been derived from the Ancient Greek word ‘Ethos’ that means habit, custom, or character. This is what ethics are in the real sense. A person’s habits and character speak volumes about the ethical values he/she possesses. In other words, a person’s ethical values define his character. We are all told as to what is good and what is bad based on the ethical norms set by society.

Once the pioneer of physics said that "I do not believe in the immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it." Hence verified that the term ethics has different dimensions and different definitions on the basis of the situation and types of people on which ethics is applied.

Let’s take an example-A recent example is the arrest of an IPS officer who was on probation, for cheating during the civil service examination raises the eyeshadow of lawmakers regarding the honesty and dedication on part of service. Can such issues only resolve through penal action? No, here lies the inculcation of integrity, human value, empathy, attitude, morality, an ethical principle that came into play. Realizing the increasing demand of this hour our lawmaker steps forward to inculcate these things for future generations to be followed by.

How can we differentiate between human action and the action of humans? Such as captain of the best IPL team and best captain of the IPL team are Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni respectively. Human actions are those that are done by humans consciously, deliberately, and in view of an end. While actions of humans are integrated with unwilful, involuntary, and unconscious. In ethics, we deal only with human action and it has a different meaning for different human beings. As a bioethicist, he has to deal with the ethical questions that arise due to the advancement of biology and medicine during the experimentation of some newly developed drugs on a satellite population. Ethics have a significant application on business during dealing with different business deals, in relation to the environment. Military ethics deals with the ethos of soldiers. Furthermore, military ethics involves the laws of war. Moreover, it also includes the question of justification of initiating military force, a decision about who may be targeted in warfare, choice of weaponry, methods for dealing with the laws of war. Public sector ethics deals with setoff moral standards, that guide public officials in their service. Furthermore, the public sector involves the morality of decision making, however, it questions ‘ Why should I be moral’’?

Ethics does not follow the law. In law, a man is guilty when he violates the rights of another, but in ethics, he is guilty if he thinks of doing so.

At last, I want to conclude that, ethics is certainly one of the most important ingredients of humanity and how man's social needs do not violate morality during maintaining the social norms and rules. There must be widespread awareness of ethics among the youth of society.
