Nutrition and Food

Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease.

Nutrition is best balanced by eating the right amounts of a large variety of foods.
  • This provides the protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins needed for a healthy body.
  • The right amounts of water and exercise are also critical to good health.

What foods should be eaten to provide a good balance of nutrients?

World Health Organization (WHO) states nutrition is a critical part of health and development. Better nutrition is related to improved infant, child, and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, lower risk of non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and longevity.

A healthy diet is a diet that maintains or improves overall health. A healthy diet provides the body with essential nutrition: fluid, macronutrients such as protein, micronutrients such as vitamins, and adequate fiber and food energy.

To get the nutrition you need, most of your daily calories should come from:

  • fresh fruits
  • fresh vegetables
  • whole grains
  • legumes
  • nuts
  • lean proteins
