Flashcards

What are flashcards?

Flashcards are small note cards used for testing and improving memory through practiced information retrieval. Flashcards are typically two-sided, with the prompt on one side and the information about the prompt on the other. This may include names, vocabulary, concepts, or procedures.

There are many benefits to using flashcards in class. Use them to elicit, practice, or review vocabulary or grammar structures. Use them as a warm-up, filler, or review for a related lesson. You can even use them as a vocabulary or grammar lesson unto themselves. But how can we use flashcards in class? Get creative with the activities suggested below:

  • Matching Game
  • Pictionary
  • Bingo
  • Pronunciation Bee
  • Pronunciation Bee

Using flashcards can be a very effective self-testing approach. Even the act of making flashcards is a way to "work out" information, challenging you to think about what information should be on one side and related details on the other. It also frees up some memory, because instead of trying to store individual facts, names, or words in your mind you will have a physical pile of cards with information. Flashcards are often part of interval exercises, and repetition helps you figure out what information you can remember easily and what requires extra effort. From a time management perspective, flashcards allow you to take advantage of less time that becomes available throughout the day or week, in addition to the planned study sessions.

Flashcards are an incredibly versatile study tool. While many students think of using them for simple facts, they can be used for complex processes throughout one's academic career. ... And, flashcards allow you to repeat the act of learning and memorizing until you are an expert on the information.
