Educating students from Sciences to Social Responsibility - A story of an educator from Tripura

Dr. Aparna Ganguly holds a doctorate degree in Physics and teaches the higher secondary classes at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Vidyabhaban Higher Secondary School. The interview documents her experiences as a teacher,  motivation behind teaching and what outcomes does she expect from students.

Tell us about yourself

I hail from the western region of Tripura. I have a doctorate degree in Physics which is why I teach sciences to the students in the higher secondary school. Aside of teaching, I enjoy many other activities in my free time such as singing, and reading I have always enjoyed extra curriculars which is why my interest lies in anchoring and I like to recite poems as well.

What is your most preferred way of teaching?

Since I teach higher secondary schools, I have to constantly implement new teaching strategies to explain complex concepts to students. In order to facilitate smooth absorption of content taught in the classroom I use audio-visual resources such as videos and images. I also give group activities to my class which help me grasp concepts better. I also teach them using interactive games.

What motivated you to become a teacher?

Along with my passion for sciences, my mother and father were also a huge inspiration for me to choose teaching as a career. My parents are both engaged in teaching profession as well which has made me look up to them while I chose teaching as a career. It is indeed fulfilling to know that my education and profession is helping students understand science better.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?

I remember a specific incident that happened at school. Once, I had reprimanded a student because he was shy and was not responsive in class, which gravely impacted his academic skills in class. I was worried that he is holding himself back and it will affect him a later. He was so submissive and quiet that he never replied to anything. I met him sometime back and I was delighted to know that he has now become a successful doctor. he came to me and touched my feet for blessing. It was an overwhelming feeling for me as I was so proud of him that he was able to take a lesson from the scolding. It helped him realise his potential and work harder towards achieving his goals.

How did you come across Gurushala and how has the platform helped you?

Gurushala has organised a training for teachers of Tripura. I was introduced to the platform during the training. Upon receiving the training, I got to know about the platform and various resources that were provided by Gurushala. Since the platform provides several opportunities for teacher engagement, it gave me a chance to enhance my teaching strategies and also learn new things. Owing to the training provided I have participated in making videos. I have gotten a chance to participate Also, I participated in planning their teacher’s day celebration to make it memorable.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?

A 21st century teacher must comprise of many qualities. He or she must be aware of NEP 2020 recommendations which requires teachers to equip themselves with Information and communication tools. They should be able to handle technically advances tools in class and use that to enhance teaching outcomes. They should also focus on experiential learning for students which would require them to ensure activity-based teaching in class as well.  As a teacher my aim is to make students gain knowledge by making classrooms joyful.

How do you wish to bring change in the society?

Each and every individual has a responsibility towards the society. Therefore, as a teacher it is my responsibility to instil the same sense of responsibility and duty among my students. My motto is to make my students good individuals who contribute towards the development of the society. They should be kind and generous at the same time must be able to distinguish between the good and evil forces in the society. They should be prudent enough to do what is in their best interest while thinking of collective welfare of the society as well. I want to make them understand the importance of literacy and education. For instance, few days before I spoke to an autorickshaw driver and explained him why covid-19 vaccinations are important. I want my students to also help people who are disadvantaged and lacks awareness about things in the same way.
