Stories of Indian Classrooms

Bringing change through community mobilization

Tell us about yourself.

I am Renuka Purohit and I have a teaching experience of approximately 10 years in a Vidya Bharti school in Rajasthan. I am currently teaching Science and Social Science to students from grades 6-8 in her school. Being in the district of Sirohi, the school is conveniently located for students from neighbouring villages to also be able to attend school in a slightly more urban area.

What are some challenges you have faced as a teacher?

School dropout is one of the chronic issues faced in peri-urban and rural areas. Thus, ensuring regular attendance and school completion becomes a challenge. In order to tackle it I have taken multiple steps including bringing all the women of the district and neighbouring villages together to propagate the idea of continuing their children’s education even after or during their teenage years.

What is your favourite section of Gurushala and why?

I have used the course modules and content library section in the past in order to provide my students with relevant audio-visual aids which can make my class more engaging.

How has Gurushala helped you in your journey as a teacher?

During the pandemic, me and my peers took assistance from Gurushala Webinars and learned how to create better presentations and videos for our students to make their course material more engaging and accessible for students. I felt that my incessant efforts had come to fruition when the students participated actively in G-NAT and also encouraged their peers and new teachers to become part of Gurushala.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?

A 21st Century Teacher is one who understands psychology of students, identifies with the diversity in the classroom and implements methods which are suitable to the diverse learners. It must also be noted that along with the academic skills of the students, understanding their psychology and creating a positive learning environment is equally important.

What is your life motto as a teacher?

With this learning, I could put a more mindful effort towards changing her behaviour for the better, and handling challenging situations with behaviours that would be more comfortable for her and her students. I have always tried  by taking a holistic approach to teaching. She has involved students’ mothers, technology, and her teachers to have a conversation (and translate it to action) about the importance of quality of education or education period.
