Life Lessons from the Headmaster

In this conversation Mr. Ajit Kumar Singh, headmaster of Bhadrapali Higher Secondary School in Unakoti, Tripura, shares the importance of relatable content for students and discusses teaching through real life problems.

Tell us about yourself.

I belong from Uttar Pradesh but currently I am working in the north eastern state of Tripura I am the Headmaster of Bhadrapali Higher Secondary School which is located in the Unakoti district of Tripura. I hold a Master Degree in English which also happens to a subject I am really fond of.

What is your most preferred way of teaching?

I prefer teaching using the Lecture Method. However, its very important that the content taught to students is applicable in real life problems. Therefore, I also give them real life examples and often drawing out from my own experiences. This helps them build practicality in their approach and they can get an idea how to handle and act on situations they will face in near future.

What motivated you to become a teacher?

Actually my father is also the Headmaster of a different school so fom the very early age i have seen him teaching many children and taking tution classes and growing up with a teacher inspired me to become one. So, I can say he is my role model and because of him I am a teacher now. He is my Guru.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?

So, I can recall a memory that is very close to my heart. Once I appeared for a competitive exam i.e Tripura Public Service Commission. That time I was not sure that whether I'll be able to crack this exam or not but all I gave is my best. My coaching center Teacher called me when the result was out and I cleared the exam so that was a very proud moment for me and my father.

How were you introduced to Gurushala?

I was suggested to join Gurushala by District Educational Department of Unakoti ,it is one of the best platform that teaches us to learn and guide students for better approach. The material provided by Gurushala has surely been helpful for many teachers and students. I wish to explore the platform more and learn about strategies that can enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?

Being a Principal I always use to raise this questions to my school teachers that in what better ways we can help our students who are weak in studies and get fail. I ask them what is their responsibilities and duties towards the students , wherever we are we have a purpose to serve so I asked them to conduct a meeting after the first semester with their parents and talk about how they can improve.

What is your life motto as a teacher?

My motto as a teacher is to guide my children and always be ready to face any challenges in their life. It is very important that we prepare our children with life skills, skills that help them survive in adverse conditions, help them in their cognitive and psychological development which can prepare them to become independent and rational individuals.

How do you wish to bring change in the society?

I teach my students not to be selfish, you should also think about the society , your environment and your surroundings. If this kind of positive thinking will be in your mind then surely you can contribute to change the society. I always say that " सोच को बदलना होगा तब ही समाज बदलेगा "
