Stories of Indian Classrooms

Working towards Equality while Teaching: Story from Kerala

Renjini V. R., a teacher of Army Public School, Kerala, prefers to teach using a combination of methods such as lecture method, through videos and images, textbooks, games and group activities. Ms. V. R. is a book lover and is currently reading the book, ‘The Secret’. She also loves painting and reading.

She has been a teacher for the past 18 years and has enjoyed every bit of it. She likes the language, Hindi and loves teaching Hindi to her students.
What is your life motto as a teacher?
I have wanted to become a teacher since my childhood. It has always been my dream and now I am proud to be a teacher.
My motto as a teacher is to work for children and equality. Along with academics, holistic development of the child should be the motto of every teacher.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?
There are so many happy memories that I think sharing one is unfair. In student life crises they call me, ask for my support and they remember me during their critical times. I feel proud and happy when they ask me for any emotional support or any help. I am always ready to help them in any way I can.

How were you introduced to Gurushala?
I found about Gurushala on Google one day. I attended the training for Army Public School teachers and then I was added to the Whatsapp group of Gurushala.
Gurushala is upskilling teachers and students. They are sharing many activities for them. I like all the activities regarding classrooms and staffroom. I also write some articles to be published in Gurushala’s Express Yourself section.

How has Gurushala helped you in your journey as a teacher?
I write articles and attend all the webinars and participate in their quizzes daily. I also encourage my students to attend it. I was a runner up in one of the national level quizzes organized by the Gurushala team. Gurushala has helped me in many ways throughout my journey. I have been in their group for 2 years now and I keep updating myself with all the new technologies and strategies to make the teaching-learning process better.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?
Teachers in every century are the same. But all teachers should always work for their children  and uplift their knowledge. Teachers should try to develop childrens’ life skills rather than only giving importance to academics. Of course academics are important but life skills should be included as well. All life skills are important such as cooperation, communication.

Ms. V. R. wants to change society through her students as she believes that children are going to be present everywhere as they can enter whichever field they wish to. At that time, they will remember the teachings shared with them. Whatever the need is, the new generation should be prepared and work on it.
