Stories of Indian Classrooms

Teaching through YouTube Channels: Story from Maharashtra

Hanmant Mahetre teaches class 8-10 in Sangli, Maharashtra. He teaches science to 8th standard and Maths to classes 9th and 10th. He likes to go with the flow of teaching the students fundamental concepts of Science first and then adding on the basic knowledge of it. He believes that if the basic concept is clear to the students, it makes it easier for them to learn anything in future. During the lockdown, he prepared powerpoint presentations to teach the students and for those who were unable to attend the lectures, he created a Youtube channel. This shows his passion for teaching and making it a point that education reaches the majority of the students.

His preferred ways of teaching are through video, images, giving group activities and by making students practise.

What motivated you to become a teacher?

Initially, my plan did not include becoming a teacher. I wanted to be an engineer but could not pursue my dream because of financial problems. After my masters in Physics, I became a teacher. I am, however, proud of the way my life has been shaped. I feel proud of the fact that the society gives so much respect to the teachers and I intend to maintain and secure that respect for future generations too.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?
The beginning of my career was in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in 2007, where I taught geometry to the students of class 8th. I used to prepare myself well before the class and made sure that the concepts of the students were clear. I am proud of the fact that those students still remember me and my teaching and also that I was able to leave  such an impact with my work.

How were you introduced to Gurushala?

I was introduced to Gurushala through ‘Rayat Shikshan Sanstha’, who had organized an event with them. I am fond of the teacher training part of Gurushala as it has been really useful for me for the past two years. Along with that, I have actively participated in Gurushala’s talk about sessions and activities, the national level ‘Science hand fun activity’ program which was running simultaneously in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Gurushala has helped me a lot in my journey. They taught me how to do game based teaching along with using different tools etc. Gurushala's application has so much content like videos, modules and training programs, that it is very useful and knowledgeable.

What is your life motto as a teacher?
My motto in life is very simple. I want to be a good teacher and preserve the respect and honor of a teacher for future generations.

How do you wish to bring change in society?
As a teacher I believe that all teachers should have a goal to educate every child regardless of his caste, financial situation or any other thing. Education should reach every corner of the society and it should be accessible to everyone, no matter what.

Through his story, we learn that teaching the students is not enough if the fundamentals and the basic concepts are not clear to the students. Thank you, Sir, for inspiring us!
