Stories of Indian Classrooms

Teacher Story of a Scholarship Winner from Uttar Pradesh

Preeti Singh teaches classes 6-8 in Firozabad district of Uttar pradesh. Her preferred ways of teaching include live demonstration of concepts, through group activities and by making students practise. Her favourite subjects are Science and Mathematics. Let’s get to know her teaching methods and experiences.

What motivated you to become a teacher?
Since childhood my dream was to become a teacher. What inspired me was the environment around me when I was a child. I have seen in my nearby villages there was not much importance or value of education. I have seen these people so closely that the parents don't pay attention to their children, whether they are studying or not. So I wanted to make a change. I wanted them to understand the importance of education and that's what inspired me to become a teacher.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?
My best memory as a teacher so far is when two years ago, I got Awarded by the 'Shikshak Samman' Award on the occasion of Teachers’ day and the scholarship I received from Vodafone of one lakh. It is a wonderful feeling when I get honored for my work.

How has Gurushala helped you in your journey as a teacher?
As I am the head of my department, I have to look after most of the work of my school so I was approached by Gurushala for a smart class for Math and Science in Sojavar district. First I denied the program because I wouldn't be able to take proper classes, but then my senior motivated me so I said yes and it turned out to be a nice decision. Now, my favorite section on the Gurushala website is of course modules. They are very useful and teach so much about classroom activities.

The television that Gurushals provided to our school and the tablets have been really helpful because since it's installation, children have been able to understand concepts better and they seemed interested in learning more and more.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?
According to me, a teacher should be constantly learning like we all had to during the COVID lockdown. I was introduced to online learning which was initially very difficult for me, learning about gadgets and everything. But As I said, teachers should always know how to adapt in any situation and find a way to educate.

How do you wish to bring change in society?
In my village, I have seen people think that education is not so important. They send their children to work on a farm instead of school. I want to change their thinking and for that, I will have to constantly go to the field and make them understand the value and importance of education. After this COVID situation, it has been difficult for few children to educate because they can't afford android mobiles and technology so we also conduct 'Maholla Shala'. We gather students who can't afford gadgets and teach them like that.

Utilising all the resources to ensure that the teaching-learning process never stop is a lesson learn from Preeti. Her motto as a teacher is that every student should be successful through education and should be able to make a good life for themselves.
