Stories of Indian Classrooms

A Teacher’s Recognition through Students

Swati Prashad teaches Hindi and Social Science to classes 7 to 8 in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Initially, she taught in Visakhapatnam and later shifted to Uttar Pradesh. Her preferred way of teaching is engaging students in the process as much as possible- by giving them group activities and by making them practise the concepts.

Here are some ideas on the basis of her interaction with Gurushala regarding her teaching methods and experiences.

What motivated you to become a teacher?
When I was studying in school, there was a need for a teacher in my neighborhood so I started gathering children in my home and started taking tuitions. That is what gave me confidence and motivated me to become a teacher.

What is your best memory so far as a teacher?
My best memory so far as a teacher is when I was teaching in Visakhapatnam, I taught there for three years. There, no one was familiar with Hindi language so when I was teaching, the students there were so curious to learn a new language and I've never seen such excitement and enthusiasm for learning Hindi language. Not only that, I also learnt Telugu. Experience of these three years is very close to my heart.

How were you introduced to Gurushala?
When I first came here I knew nothing about Gurushala. I saw here people talking about it and students  engaging in Gurushala activities. Then my senior told me this is Gurushala and gave me some work about it. He gave me a task to fill forms for Gurushala of children and I really liked working for it. That is how I was introduced to Gurushala. Currently, I am still exploring Gurushala and its sections and I am excited to know more about it.

What according to you is a 21st Century Teacher?
According to me as we are modernizing very quickly we are slowly forgetting our roots and our culture.  I believe we should never forget our culture and our roots. So, a 21st century teacher should know how to teach the children about our culture and modern studies and maintain balance between the two.

How do you wish to bring change in society?
There is not enough importance of education in our society. So, I want to make an attempt to bring change. So I want to preserve the culture and importance of education for future generations. As a teacher, I have one motto in my life that I get recognition in society through my students for the teaching I have imparted and I want my students to go places.
